Arismar do Espírito Santo

An intuitive, self-educated multi-instrument musician, with a unique style of playing and composing recognized as onte of the greatest musicians in Brazil, he began his career as a drummer. Later, feeling the need to play a harmonic instrument, he chose the acoustic bass. Today he plays several string instruments such as: four to six string electric bass, electric and acoustic guitar and piano, as well as drums and percussion.

Recorded his first solo CD in 1993, containing his own compositions and classics of Brazilian popular music. Excellent Brazilian musicians participated in this recording, like: Hermeto Paschoal, Heraldo do Monte, Vinicius Dorin, Jane Duboc, Naylor Proveta de Azevedo, Edsel Gomez, Roberto Sion, Dominguinhos. This CD gave him the Sharp Music Award, in the Instrumental Music category.

Arismar took part in many shows and recordings with important musicians and singers such as: César Camargo Mariano, Sebastião Tapajós, Banda Mantiqueira, Sueli Costa, Raul de Souza, Mauricio Einhorn, Helio Delmiro, Roberto Sion, Sivuca, Dory Caymmi, Heraldo do Monte, Lenine, Joyce, Paquito D’Rivera, Lisa Ono, Joao Donato, Laercio de Freitas, Mauricio Carrilho, Paulo Moura, Yuka Kido, Toninho Horta, Olivia Byington, Renato Borgueti, Eduardo Gudin, Ze Renato, Leandro Braga, Cristovao Bastos, Marcos Suzano, Fatima Guedes, Nivaldo Ornelas, Luiz Eça, Filo Machado, Roberto Menescal, Henrique “Zurdo” Roizner, John Lee, Chango Farias Gomes, Satoshi Takeishi, Lucho Gonzales, among many others.

With Hermeto Paschoal’s Trio he toured Europe (France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Holland, and Portugal). With Leny Andrade he took part of the Umbria Jazz 95, in Perugia, Italy, and in other jazz festivals in Brazil. With accordeonist and composer Dominguinhos he did the “Asa Branca Project” playing the Brazilian northeastern music in honor of Luiz Gonzaga, having presented more than 200 shows around Brazil. Played in Japan at the Blue Note Jazz Club (Fukuoka and Tokio) with Joyce and in several shows during the Expo 98 (Portugal). Has organized and coordinated Master Classes of Creative Music for bass, drums, percussion and acoustic and electric guitar, throughout several cities in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santos, Ribeirão Preto, Salvador, Fortaleza, Curitiba, and others) and also around the world (Resistencia - Argentina, Copenhagen’s Musikkonservatoriun – Denmark). Also participated in three Free Jazz Festivals in Brazil. Has been chosen as one of the best guitar players in Brazil by the specialized Brazilian magazine “Guitar Players”. Toured Brazil in 2005 in “Pixinguinha Project” sponsored by the National Foundation for Arts (Funarte) and participated in France’s “Brazilian Year”.

In his second solo CD- “Estacao Brasil”, he shows various new compositions which are the results of his varied experiences, and plays among good friends such as Jane Duboc, Naná Vasconcelos, Silvia Goes, Thiago do Espirito Santo, Alex Buck, Bia Goes, Cuca Teixeira, Lea Freire and Vinícius Dorin. Most of the tracks were recorded live at the studio and some tracks are announced by famous Brazilian Radio personalities. He is now preparing to record his new CD.
